Turkish crews continue search and rescue work in places affected by the earthquake that struck Friday, Izmir Province (west).
According to the Turkish Minister of Environment and Urban Planning, Mustafa Korum, rescue crews are still continuing their work in 9 buildings out of the 17 damaged buildings in the district of “Beracli”, the districts most affected by the earthquake.
The minister pointed out that the aforementioned crews completed their work in 8 buildings, and managed to retrieve a number of people from the rubble, wounded, but alive despite the passage of many hours after the earthquake.
Rescue teams succeeded in taking out a 62-year-old citizen, Amina Arn, 14 hours after the earthquake.
Likewise, rescue crews found another citizen, aged 53, who was alive despite the passage of 15 hours after the earthquake.
The residents of the region preferred to spend the night in the tents set up by the Turkish Red Crescent, and the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management “Afad”.
In an interview with Anatolia, citizen Yildiz Terzioglu (74 years) said that this is the first time that she lived in such difficult conditions, noting that she did not see earthquakes except on television.
Earlier on Friday, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Izmir, with its epicenter in the Aegean Sea, 17 kilometers from the coasts of “Safri Hesar” district of the state, at a depth of 16.54 km.
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management “AFAD” announced that the number of earthquake victims has risen to 24, and 804 injured.
AFAD said in a statement, at dawn on Saturday, that after the earthquake that struck the Aegean Sea off the aforementioned state, 341 aftershocks, 31 of them, were above 4 degrees, until 04:00 local time (01:00 GMT).
