He is now in critical condition in hospital
The French public prosecutor announced, on Saturday, the arrest of a person suspected of shooting a Greek priest in Lyon.
And the local website “France 24” quoted a source in the French police, who requested anonymity, that “the Greek priest Nikolaus Cakavilaki (52 years) was closing his church at noon when he was attacked, and he is now in a serious condition in hospital.”
The attacker fled the scene, but Lyon Prosecutor Nicolas Jacquet later announced that one of the suspects had been arrested.
Jacquet said, “A person whose specifications matched the description provided by eyewitnesses was placed in custody.”
He added, “The suspect was not carrying a weapon when he was arrested.”
According to preliminary data, the suspect is 40 years old.
Earlier Saturday, the French police announced that “an Orthodox priest, holding Greek citizenship, was shot with a hunting rifle in the eastern city of Lyon, wounding him, and he is now in a critical health condition, while the attacker fled.”
