بنى لهم خليفة المسلمين “الأموي” من بيت مال الدولة العديد من الكنائس في دمشق وغوطتها بقيت كلها حتى اليوم شاهداً صادقاً بوجه كل أكاذيب الطائفيين، وبنى من نفس الخزينة الجامع الأموي، كنائس ظلت منذ ألف وأربعمائة عام قائمة وربما كانت “الكنيسة المريمية” من أهمها حيث قام الخليفة الأموي الراشد عمر بن عبد العزيز بإكمال ما بدأه الوليد بن عبد الملك ببنائها بشكل كامل وبديع من بيت مال الدولة، كنيسة تعرضت لأحداث كثيرة لكنها كانت تعود أكبر وأجمل مما كانت، كنيسة الرئاسة الروحية للمسيحيين الشرقيين الأرثوذوكس التي وُجد إلى جانبها مسجد صغير كان يسمى بالمسجد العمري، ذهب عند توسيع الطريق منذ فترة لكن بقيت مئذنته “المئذنة العمرية” إلى جانب أختها “الكنيسة المريمية” كشاهدٍ ورمزٍ لسوريا التي نحب ونرغب ونحلم وقامت ثورتنا من أجلها.
