The Gagauz Turkish language is the main factor that determines the identity of the people of the region

President of the Gagauzia Autonomous Region in Moldova, Irina Flach, said that Turkish support for them is “invaluable,” stressing that their relations with Ankara are based on camaraderie and mutual respect, thanks to the efforts made by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In 1994, Gagauzia got an autonomy within the Republic of Moldova (Eastern Europe), with a population of about 200,000 people belonging to the Turkish race.

She added to Anadolu Agency, prior to talks she held in Ankara, Tuesday, with President Erdogan on bilateral relations, that the projects that Turkey is establishing in Gagauzia contribute to solving major problems facing her country, such as citizens traveling abroad and low birth rates in the region.

She stated that her country recorded a slight increase in the birth rate in 2020, saying: “We need to create the necessary conditions in the region so that young people do not travel abroad, and encourage them to continue to live in their hometown and start a family.”

In this context, she indicated that “the support that Turkey provides to my country is not invaluable, and we value it highly.”

Flach pointed out that she prepared a project to build an industrial school in the capital, Komrat, and is about to present it to President Erdogan, with the aim of training newly graduated engineers and developing the industrial field in the region.

** A relationship based on respect

Flach stressed that the relations of Gagauzia and Turkey are constantly developing, and that they are based on camaraderie and mutual respect, thanks to the efforts made by President Erdogan.

“We are very grateful to his person, and are fortunate to be working with Erdogan and his team. Our cooperation is paying off,” she said.

She pointed out that the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, “TIKA”, “has implemented many projects in Moldova and the Gagauzia Autonomous Region, including the sports complex in the capital, Komrat, which we are waiting eagerly to open.”

** 95 companies with Turkish capital

During the past five years, since the free trade agreement signed between Moldova and Turkey came into effect in 2016, Gagauzia’s exports to Turkey have increased by 62.7 percent, according to Flach.

It indicated that Turkish imports to Gagauzia in 2020 amounted to about $ 39.2 million, while the number of companies registered with Turkish capital reached 95.

She indicated that her country plans to develop the sectors of industry and information technology, and that the region has the right to enact local laws that contribute to the economic development of the region.

Gagauzia offers important advantages to attract foreign investors, and to provide the best conditions for Turkish companies that continue to invest in industrial fields, in order to allow the opportunity to easily export their products to the European Union and the CIS countries (an international organization made up of independent Soviet republics), according to Flach.

She explained that her government is in constant contact with international organizations and the Turkish embassy in the Moldovan capital Chisinau, in parallel with the formation of a working group between the governments of Moldova and Gagauzia, to prepare draft laws to solve the problems of the region.

In this regard, she pointed to the importance of adopting draft decisions agreed upon between the local government and the central government in Chişinu, by the Moldovan Parliament.

She added that Komrat is working to push the central government to recognize Gagauzia as an open area for cooperation in order to improve the social and economic situation in the country and increase the welfare of citizens.

** The Turkish language defines the identity of the Gagauz people

Flach indicated that her country, as of 2018, began to take steps towards expanding the fields of use of the Gagauz Turkish language in the autonomous regions.

She stressed that this language is the main factor that determines the identity of the Gagauz people, and that her country is working to create the necessary conditions to expand the areas of its use, especially in the field of education.

In this context, Flach stated that the Presidency of the Affairs of Diaspora Turks and Related Communities in the Republic of Turkey has provided various types of support to qualify Gagauz teachers, to be able to teach in the official Turkish Gagauz languages in the region, and the official Romanian in Moldova.
